14.4m High Water Tank Cast in One Single Pour with PERI Engineering

Discover how PERI Qatar optimized the formwork design using GT 24 girders, SRU Light walers, and advanced engineering solutions for this challenging water infrastructure project.

Engineering a Safe and Efficient Single-Pour Concrete Solution for Large Water Infrastructure

Constructing large reinforced concrete water tanks requires more than high-performance formwork systems. It demands detailed engineering, careful planning, and solutions specifically designed to meet demanding structural and safety requirements.

One recent project challenged the PERI Qatar Engineering Team to design a formwork solution capable of constructing a 14.4m-high and 14.5m-long reinforced concrete water tank wall in one single concrete pour.

From the outset, the objective was clear: develop a safe, optimized, and practical engineering solution that would enable the contractor to achieve the client's requirements without compromising quality, structural performance, or site safety.

Through detailed engineering calculations and optimized formwork design, PERI delivered a solution tailored to the project's specific requirements.

Engineering Challenges of a 14.4m Single Concrete Pour

Casting a concrete wall measuring 14.4 metres in height in one continuous pour introduces several engineering challenges that must be addressed during the design stage.

These include:

  • High fresh concrete pressure acting on the formwork.
  • Wind loads acting on tall formwork panels.
  • Safe lifting and rotation of large formwork elements.
  • Effective concrete vibration throughout the entire wall height.
  • Structural efficiency without unnecessary material consumption.

Each aspect required careful consideration to ensure both safety and performance throughout the construction process.

Optimized GT 24 Girder Design

One of the key elements of the solution was the use of PERI GT 24 girders.

The engineering design optimized the arrangement of the girders, reducing the overall number required while maintaining the specified fresh concrete pressure of 80 kN/m², in accordance with the client's concrete specification and a concrete rate of rise of 1.0 metre per hour.

This optimized design provided both structural efficiency and practical installation benefits.

Designing for Wind Stability

Due to the exceptional height of the formwork, wind loading became a significant design consideration.

To provide the required stability, push-pull props were installed at four different levels, with two props provided for each panel.

This arrangement enabled the formwork to safely resist the anticipated wind loads while maintaining alignment throughout the concreting process.

Internal Access for Concrete Vibration

Maintaining concrete quality over a wall height of 14.4 metres requires effective compaction.

To facilitate internal vibration, the engineering team incorporated 80 × 80 cm access openings within the formwork system.

This solution allowed operators to perform internal vibration efficiently while eliminating the need for external vibrators, which can significantly increase pressure acting on the formwork.

Safe Lifting and Rotation of Formwork Panels

Another important engineering consideration involved the safe lifting and rotation of the formwork panels from the horizontal to the vertical position.

To improve structural behaviour during lifting operations, PERI increased the number of strongbacks in critical locations.

This reduced the bending moments acting on the SRU walers, improving safety during panel handling and installation.
